At Campbell Monument, we take great pride in being part of meaningful projects that serve our communities. One such initiative, led by our dedicated sales representative Bill Shields at Cobourg Monument along with Cobourg Union Cemetery caretaker Michel Cabardos, has brought a profound new memorial to life—one that offers solace and recognition to families who have experienced pregnancy loss.

For many parents, the loss of a child during pregnancy is an invisible grief, unrecognized by official systems and often left unspoken. Bill, who has both personal and professional experience with this kind of loss, understood the importance of having a place where parents could mourn and honour their children. Together with Michel and psychotherapist Sabine Fischer of Cobourg, they worked to create a dedicated memorial at Cobourg Union Cemetery.
The new monument, featuring a beautifully carved butterfly and the words "In Memory of our Sacred Children," stands just inside the gates of the cemetery. It provides a space for families to grieve and reflect. Unlike traditional burials, no government documentation is required, and parents can choose to have their child's name and date inscribed on the monument. The only cost involved is the engraving fee, and efforts are being made to find community sponsors to help families facing financial barriers.
Campbell Monument was honored to contribute to this important initiative by donating a portion of the costs, helping ensure this project became a reality. We are incredibly proud of Bill for spearheading this effort and working closely with the community to make this vision come to life.
The response to the memorial has already shown that this kind of recognition was deeply needed. Parents who have suffered in silence for years or even decades now have a place where their loss is acknowledged and where they can find comfort. The Cobourg Union Cemetery is leading the way in providing a compassionate space for those who have experienced pregnancy loss, and we are grateful to have played a role in this.
